Understanding What Dental Crowns Are

Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums when you go to the dentist’s office for an annual checkup, the dentist will perform various procedures. While some of the routine treatments include cavity fillings, bonding and teeth cleaning, there are other procedures which are common as well. We at Luck Dental Clinic offer comprehensive dental treatments including crowns. These come in a variety of forms and serve different purposes.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns or caps are fixed prosthetics that are cemented firmly onto the teeth. A crown restores a tooth’s size, shape and strength. It fully covers the visible section of your dental implant or natural tooth. Once it’s in place, only your dentist would be able to remove it.

The primary purpose of a crown is to improve the overall appearance of your mouth. It helps cover tooth damage or deterioration, provides support and strength to the affected tooth. Your Dentist may prescribe a crown to:

  • Restore & protect broken, decayed, worn or cracked teeth.
  • Support and protect a tooth after a root canal or large filling treatment.
  • Cover dental implants.
  • Hold dental bridges/other prosthetic devices in place.
  • Improve the appearance of your smile by covering a severely discolored or misshapen tooth

The dentist will first take an impression of the tooth that needs to be covered. Before this step the dentist will reduce the size of the tooth in order to ensure that the crown fits on it well. While the permanent crown is being made in the dental lab, the dentist might place a temporary one.

Dental Crowns- Different Types

There are four main types of dental crowns:

  • Porcelain-Fused To Metal – These crowns provide a very strong bond. They are connected to metal structures, which makes them stronger and more durable than standard porcelain because they are connected to a metal structure that lends it a good amount of support.
  • Porcelain- These are typically used in front teeth restoration because they blend in beautifully with the color of your natural teeth. Ceramic crowns are made from a special porcelain-based material.
  • Gold Alloys– These crowns are made of a combination material- copper, gold and other metals. They not only provide support and strength to the tooth, but won’t fracture or cause wear in the tooth either.
  • Base Metal Alloys– The non-noble metals used to make these crowns are highly corrosion-resistant. Very little healthy tooth needs to be removed before fitting these crowns and they lend strength to the natural tooth.

Understanding The Main Differences Between The Crown Types

Aside from the materials they are made from, there are some other differences between these crowns such as:

  • While all-porcelain crowns are cosmetically appealing, their sealing ability depends entirely on the condition of the underlying tooth and the quality of the filling materials. In comparison, the other three types of dental crowns provide very good seals against leakages.
  • Metal alloy and gold crowns are the most durable.
  • All-porcelain crowns aren’t as strong. They are more susceptible to pressure and can become damaged if you happen to grind your teeth excessively at night.
  • Porcelain-fused to metal crowns offer better durability.
  • Both, the porcelain-based and all-porcelain crowns are highly resistant to deterioration and wear. However they require a little more care than metal alloy and gold ones.
  • When fitted by expert dentists, crowns can last for a number of years without falling out or coming loose. Maintaining proper oral health is the best way to ensure that your dental crowns stay clean and spotless.
