What Are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic appliances made up of artificial teeth to improve your smile’s appearance and functionality. Whether you’re missing some or all of your natural teeth, denture solutions can help restore your oral health and confidence.
Our restorative dentist in Luck, WI provides custom-made denture appliances for patients looking to replace some or all of their missing teeth. We offer both traditional and implant-supported options for your convenience, each with their own benefits and unique features.
Benefits of Dentures
Both full and partial dentures offer a host of advantages. Some of these benefits include:
- Affordability: Dentures are a cost-effective tooth replacement option, as they can replace entire arches of missing teeth at a time.
- Natural Appearance: Gaps in your smile can detract from your overall appearance, and may even make you look older than you are. Dentures can deliver a brilliant, more uniform smile.
- Improved Tooth Function: Missing teeth make it difficult to chew and speak properly. Dentures can restore normal tooth function, so you can eat your favorite foods without issue.
- Quick, Non-Invasive Procedure: Full and partial dentures don’t require invasive procedures to place. Unless you decide on implant-supported dentures, you may be able to receive your dentures in as little as three to six weeks, and won’t need to undergo any invasive surgical procedures.
Types of Dentures
Full Dentures
Full dentures replace an entire arch of missing teeth, and are what many patients visualize when they think of dentures. These appliances have been used for many decades, but advances in technology have improved the look, feel, and fit of these devices. Full dentures rest atop the gums and are supported by the bone ridge underneath.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are an ideal option for patients with some remaining healthy teeth. Like full dentures, partial dentures are supported by the gums and underlying jawbone. However, they also have special dental clasps, made of metal or plastic, that anchor to the adjacent teeth for extra stability and removability.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Patients who choose implant-supported dentures will have their implants placed by a specialist, such as an oral surgeon or periodontist. Once the implants have healed, Dr. Clemenson can create a custom denture restoration that will connect directly to the implant posts.
These dentures will never shift or slide out of place. However, only patients with the necessary gum health and jawbone density are eligible for dental implant placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Due to normal wear, you’ll likely need to replace your dentures after five to eight years. However, dentures made from plastic rather than acrylic may need replacing sooner. In some cases, your dentures may only need to be rebased. Rebasing will require remaking the gum portion and structural base of the denture while keeping the existing denture teeth.
However, if you have implant-supported dentures, you’ll only need to have the restoration replaced, as dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care.
Dentures have gained a bad reputation for benign clunky, uncomfortable appliances. However, thanks to modern advancements in dental technology, dentures can be extremely comfortable if made correctly. Your dentures will be customized for you and we’ll make them as comfortable as possible. Our dentist will show you how to put your dentures in correctly to maximize your comfort throughout the day.
